So you work for a major international corporation. Hopefully you received the letter recently that the CEO will be visiting every single company employee at their home in the next few weeks Your visit is this afternoon! He arrives at the scheduled time. A really nice guy, impeccably dressed with impeccable grooming and manners. With him are two big guys looking somewhat uncomfortable in their suits, but hey, they're with the CEO, they must be cool. After some small talk about the company, their vision (which doesn't seem to make too much sense, but anyway...) he asks to meet your kids and family. You apologise profusely explaining your eldest is in boarding school and only his little 11 year old brother is at home. ...The hubby is out trying to make the daily bread. More small talk and you offer him some tea which he accepts graciously. You head to the kitchen to make, only to be disturbed by ominous sounds and grunting coming from the lounge. You're not sure what it is, so carry on, taking a few minutes more before heading back to the sitting room and your guests. You drop the tray in shocked alarm. The goons constrain your eleven year old son while the CEO has a garrotte around your son's neck, a cruel grimace on his face as he strangles the life slowly out of your child. You watch in horror, lunging forward to help but are stopped in your tracks by one of the goons. You almost hear the blood vessels bursting in your child's eyes, saliva drooling from his purple gaping mouth, just before the struggling child passes out. 'What the fuck are you doing?' you howl hysterically at the silent individual killing your bloodline. 'It's okay. Don't worry. There will be more. ...There will always be more,' he answers. You nod silently and sit back for him to finish his work...
Is this what you would do? Corporates are the largest contributors to the inevitable demise of our planet. But what can you do about it, you ask? I don't know. I do not have the answers, but if the CEO of any corporate on earth had to walk into your house and endanger your kids, you would most certainly act in some way. But that is what they are doing, as surely as if they did come into your house and attacked your family. Their plastics, their pollution, their corruption, their focus on commodities above humanity are doing this to our present and your children's future. It is up to us who feed the beast to make sure it remains constrained and unable to cause more harm to us, our family and our kids. As I say, I do not know the answer, but I do know apathy is not one of them...
